Pratik has been roaming the hills of Nepal since boyhood. He joined the Scouts fifteen years ago as a young boy, and the trail has been his classroom ever since — hiking, camping, and learning to look after himself and the people around him in the outdoors. Eleven years ago he became a Rover Scout, and today he is the one out front: leading school-age boy and girl scouts into the very hills that shaped him, passing on the experience that made him.

That upbringing handed him a toolkit most guides spend years assembling. Rope work and building rope bridges, cooking over an open fire, reading weather and terrain, first aid, and the quiet discipline of being ready for anything — the scout's creed — are all second nature to him. And because scouting camps in Nepal happen almost entirely in the hills, leading a column of scouts is, in practice, guiding a trek.

A scout guide at heart, Pratik decided to make it official and took the formal course to earn his license as a trekking guide — adding the credential to a craft he had already been practising for more than a decade. His real expertise sits close to home, in the Kathmandu Valley: because school groups don't take long expeditions, he has spent years perfecting day hikes and short two-day, one-night treks, and there is barely a hill on the valley rim he hasn't walked.

That is not to say he stays near the city. Drawing on his scouting discipline — and that same readiness for anything — Pratik has guided groups on classic Himalayan treks as well. But it is the decade and more of scouting, with all its camps and craft and care for the people in his charge, that makes him the guide he is.
